Sa’ Nyu Wa is located at Grand Canyon West on the Hualapai Tribe\u2019s Reservation land. Archeological evidence shows the Hualapai\u2019s ancestors’ history in the region dates back to <\/span>600 A.D.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"TheFor the Hualapai, the Grand Canyon is a\u00a0<\/span>sacred site<\/span><\/a>\u00a0where their people originated. Sa’\u00a0Nyu\u00a0Wa\u00a0is significant because the Hualapai believe an eagle saved their ancestors from flooding in the Grand Canyon by flying them to the canyon\u2019s west rim, then turned to stone. The name Sa’\u00a0Nyu\u00a0Wa\u00a0refers to the shape of the stone there because it resembles an eagle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The eagle\u2019s role in saving\u00a0the Hualapai\u00a0is one reason the eagle is culturally significant to their people. The eagle is also a significant part of the Hualapai afterlife because it carries the spirits of the Hualapai to the next world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Should Visitors Know About Respecting Hualapai Land While at the Skywalk?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Visitors to Sa’\u00a0Nyu\u00a0Wa\u00a0should respect the Hualapai people and their customs and recognize that the site is sacred to the Hualapai. Supporting the Hualapai, while respecting the policies they\u00a0have to\u00a0protect the\u00a0site,\u00a0is crucial.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors should not bring outside food or drink to Sa’\u00a0Nyu\u00a0Wa. Guests must also leave their personal bags, backpacks, and purses in the free lockers provided onsite. Visitors can support\u00a0the Hualapai\u00a0by\u00a0purchasing\u00a0professional photos, as guests cannot use personal cameras or phones on\u00a0the Skywalk.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, all guests must wear shoes on the Skywalk and cover their shoes with protective covers to prevent damage to the glass.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
